Dialling 0091!

IIPM PUBLICATION
After registering a stupendous growth in all its segments, the telecom sector seems to be back to square one. Wait, before you misunderstand the statement above, let us clear the fact that the dream-run of the telecom sector has not come to an end. In fact, the wire-line segment that had been witnessing a sluggish growth rate until now is all set to boom once again. Be it AT&T, Verizon, British Telecom, Vodafone or Telstra, all major global telecom players have lined up to get a chunk of India’s National Long Distance (NLD) & International Long Distance (ILD) sector. Already Verizon has tied up with Videocon Group to form a company called Verizon Business India, which has already applied for license to provide ILD services in India.

John Killian, President, Verizon Business, said, “We are delighted to partner with the Videocon Group and, through Verizon Business India, will be able to build on our existing presence in the country, providing high-quality service and support directly to customer operations based there.” Well, going by the proceedings, it seems that gloomy days for India’s wire-line sector are going to end soon.

However, there are some policy issues like the ‘ownership of telecommunications license’ and ‘opening up of the international bandwidth sector for the foreign players’ which still remain unsolved. The opportunity is knocking its doors, now it’s up to telecom regulators, how quickly do they want to avail it.

The Constitution lists Prohibition as a directive principle of state policy

Alcohol is a psychoactive substance, meaning it makes people feel different. Raj (not his real name) began to feel great. “It made me forget where I came from. I had no issues of self-esteem while drinking. I didn’t need a job, I didn’t need a wife, and I didn’t even need friends. I was married to vodka. But the divorce was costly,” he says. Raj is a member of the self-help group Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in Delhi. He sits every evening in AA meetings and listens and shares. Stories of devastation. Stories of grit. These are people born and raised in India, where many sections of society are taught not to drink (like Brahmins and Muslims).

Toyota learned all the tricks in the book from GM and Ford, and is now beating them at their own game...

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
After 75 years, the world automobile industry is about to get a new No. 1. The Toyota Motor Company of Japan issued a 2007 forecast on December 22, 2006 that would make it first in global sales, ahead of the General Motors, which has been the world’s biggest auto company since 1931. Toyota, expects to sell 9.34 million vehicles next year which would exceed the 9.2 million vehicles that GM expects to sell worldwide this year.

GM sales are on a downward trajectory. Toyota, meanwhile, is opening factories and hiring more workers to meet growing demand for its vehicles. Toyota’s dethroning of GM has been anticipated for some time now. The first inklings came three years ago, when Toyota issued a series of goals for 2010 that would put it ahead of where GM would be then. “If Toyota overtakes GM, that is a very big deal,” said Mark Hawkins, Chairman, UAW union, GM’s Flint truck plant.
